The Department of Health, The Department of Social Development, TISA (Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa), PIASA (Pharmaceutical Industry Association of S.A.), Innovative Medicines of South Africa, NAPM, SMASA, National Gambling Board, National Responsible Gambling, JT Publishing (Hustler), Adult World, SAB Miller, ARA (The Industry Association for Responsible Alcohol Use), SA Liquor Brand Owner’s Association, Distell, Brandhouse, KWV, Douglas Green Bellingham, E Snell & Co, Pernod-Ricard, The Really Great Brand Company, VinPro, Wine Cellars SA, Tsogo Sun Group, Casino Association of South Africa.

The Addiction Action Campaign of South Africa demands that:
Anyone, including companies, organisations, government and individuals, become financially accountable for the harm that they cause, arising from the sale of their products and or services which are addictive, to citizens who are, or who may become addicted to such products and or services.

The entities in question include, but are not limited to, government, the alcohol industry, the tobacco industry, the gambling industry, the pharmaceutical and pornography industries.

We expect of them, that within a reasonable period of time, all of these entities must:
1) Determine through acceptable measurement methods, what percentage of their consumers are addicted to their products and or services.
2) Determine through acceptable measurement methods, how much profit is made from the sale of these products and or services from their addicted consumers.
3) Determine through acceptable measurement methods, the harm that is caused to this section of consumers as well as to innocents who are associated with them, because of their addiction to these products and or services.
4) Disclose all of these measured results, as well as the method of measurement used, to the South African public and to The Addiction Action Campaign using every possible media resource available.
5) Admit publicly, that it can never be right to profit from addiction.
6) Admit publicly, that profiting from the sale of addictive products and or services, without spending matching profits from this sector on harm reduction, treatment and prevention, is in fact and in part, enabling destructive behaviours to continue.
7) Admit publicly, that anyone who profits from the sale of addictive products and or services, is responsible for addressing the harm that they cause.
8) Commit to raising their harm reduction spending, to at least, but not limited to, the level of the profit made from this section of consumers, within a reasonable period of time, on addiction prevention and treatment.
9) Commit to ensuring, that a balanced message is portrayed to the South African public, through, but not limited to, the media, about the devastating consequences of using addictive products and or services.
10) Government must become independent of its dependency to taxes generated from addiction and such taxes must be spent solely on prevention and on providing addiction treatment that is accessible to all South Africans.

The Addiction Action Campaign plans to address these human rights violations, using the means of the Constitutional Court, by application for a verdict, on whether or not it is right to profit from addiction.

We will endeavor to publicly congratulate anyone who takes positive steps towards ensuring responsible business practice, which ensures that harm is fairly addressed. However, we will always privately and publicly challenge, inadequacies that fail to address these imbalances.
